The History of Smoking Hemp Flower

History can be a boring subject at the best of times but when we are talking about the most fascinating plant in the world, it suddenly gets interesting.

The discovery of ancient incense burners in China proved that hemp was first smoked, or more specifically burned, at least 2500 years ago!

Prior to this time, we can only speculate but given its many practical applications and ability to grow in most terrains it's plausible that other ancient civilizations used and quite possibly smoked hemp flowers too.

Thanks to archeological digs and accounts from historians we have an abundance of references to the use of hemp flowers throughout the last couple of thousand years.

Hemp is of course what we call a cannabis plant with a high amount of CBD and little to none of the psychoactive THC. Both hemp and THC-rich cannabis flowers would have been available throughout the known world.

History tells us that human beings have long had a unique, personable and transforming relationship with hemp flowers.

It is hard to imagine but over 2800 years ago in ancient China hemp had the highest status. Archeologists found 13 hemp plants laid out like a shroud on a 35-year-old man’s body. A sign that the hemp plant was possibly revered both in life and in death.

300 years later a famous scholar Herodotus in his book ‘The Histories’, documents a people living near the Caspian sea who threw hemp seeds onto hot stones and breathed the vapor in. Some laugh about this being the first known account of vaping hemp flowers.

In 140 AD a Chinese physician Hua Tuo used to boil hemp and use it as anesthesia. This is similar to hemp tea but in all likelihood, it was more than likely a THC-rich flower.

In Arabia from the 8th to the 18th century, physicians used hemp flowers as medicine to treat a number of conditions. They knew then of its anti-epileptic, diuretic, antiemetic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and pain-killing properties according to a recent Spanish paper.

It wasn’t just the doctors who were using hemp flowers either. It was customary in many Middle Eastern countries for people of all backgrounds to smoke hemp flowers using the hookah.

The Chinese knew all about the medicinal powers of hemp flowers. In 1578 Li Shizhen wrote in the ‘Compendium of Materia Medica’, numerous references of hemp flower as a treatment for many illnesses.

In America in 1619 new laws were introduced in Virginia requiring all farmers to grow hemp for rope. The government only needed the stalk fibers so many farmers would have kept the hemp flower and smoked it.

Smoking hemp flowers would have been a pastime of many Americans up until the late 19th and early 20th-century before propaganda fueled prohibition removed all forms of hemp.

Smoking Hemp in 2020

Today hemp is smoked and enjoyed around the world once more. None more so than in the US where a change to the law in 2019 made CBD-rich hemp federally legal once more.

This opened the doors for many people who wanted quality organic hemp flowers over THC-rich cannabis. The fact is that some people just want to feel relaxed rather than feel stoned.

Hemp flower is packed full of the cannabinoid CBD which has been shown in numerous clinical trials to be incredible at reducing anxiety. These trials also noted that unlike anti-anxiety medication, that natural hemp flower did not make participants feel drowsy.

Hempettes

Because hemp flowers contain no nicotine or any other nasty chemical they are a great alternative for smokers. Millions of people have quit smoking cigarettes as a result of making the switch to hemp flowers.

Hempettes, for example, look like cigarettes. The experience too is similar to smoking but unlike smoking, there are no dangerous chemicals. Only pure organic hemp flowers - like the old days.

A lot of people who enjoy cannabis like to add hemp flowers to their stash to increase the CBD content. CBD has been shown in studies to reduce the negative effects of THC-rich cannabis.

Smoking hemp flowers is really quite enjoyable and leaves you feeling nice and relaxed but with no foggy mind afterward like THC-rich cannabis might.

Quality organic hemp flower rich in terpenes is essential as this is what gives you that delicious flavor and scent.

Our ancestors burned organic hemp flowers 2500 years ago and now with Hempettes, you can experience it too.

No nicotine. No nasty chemicals. Just quality hemp flowers for a quality smoke.
